The village of Pinehurst will rededicate a park and monument to honor World War II Gen. George C. Marshall on Friday.
Marshall was U.S. Army Chief of Staff during the war, and went on to be Secretary of Defense and Secretary of State before retiring to Pinehurst. He died in the village in 1959.
The granite monument to Marshall was erected before his death near the Village Green and later moved to make way for tennis courts. It’s now been moved again to a more prominent location at the corner of N.C. 2 and Carolina Vista Drive.
Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, the current Army Chief of Staff, will speak at Friday’s ceremony, which is open to the public. It begins at 11 a.m.
