A memorial service for Allen de Hart will take place Saturday, Nov. 12, in the 91-acre botanical garden he and his wife established outside Louisburg.
De Hart, the author of several hiking guides and a force behind the development of the 1,150-mile Mountains-to-Sea Trail, died last month at age 90.
DeHart taught history and psychology for more than 50 years at Louisburg College and donated the botanical garden to the college in 2012. He began and underwrote a concert series at the college that led to other arts and cultural endeavors in Franklin County, including the International Whistlers Convention, which brought whistlers from around the world to Louisburg for 40 years.
The memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at the De Hart Botanical Gardens, 3585 U.S. 401, about 5 miles south of Louisburg. De Hart was buried Oct. 19 in the Woolwine Cemetery outside Stuart, Va., near where he was born and raised.
