The U.S. Coast Guard is searching wide and far for a sailor who issued a mayday call Sunday night while on his way from North Carolina to New York City.
Joseph Calland, 73, and his 39-foot sailboat “Nennette” were reported overdue to the command center in Portsmith, Va. on Wednesday morning. His last-known port call was Beaufort, N.C.
Mid-Atlantic region Coast Guard units on Wednesday conducted searches covering 2,063 square miles between the two locations.
The mayday call came at 11:20 p.m. Sunday, from a French sailor later confirmed to be Calland. Coast Guard and Navy crews searched the vicinity where the call was made through Monday afternoon.
