A man tried to escape arrest on foot before swimming more than a mile out to sea. But it wasn’t just police that were chasing him.
Surf City police drone footage shows a shark trailing Zachary Kingsbury.
Kingsbury, 20, was stopped by Surf City police on Wednesday. Police allegedly spotted “contraband” in his car. While police were interviewing him, he ran – headed to the beach, according to Port City Daily and WWAY.
Kingsbury, of Linwood, Wash., allegedly fled police all the way into the ocean. Police used a drone to track him as he swam nearly a mile from shore. In the drone video, a shark can be seen following Kingsbury.
So the police pursuit became a rescue that Pender County emergency crews, the U.S. Coast Guard, the Surf City Fire Department and Topsail Beach police all joined.
It took nearly two hours for Kingsbury to be rescued and taken into custody near North Topsail Beach where he was arrested and taken to the Pender County Jail.
