The Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins will play a game at Fort Bragg on July 3, marking the first regular season game of a professional sport ever played on an active military base, the Army announced Tuesday.
The game will be played in a new 12,500-capacity ballpark being built by Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association and will be broadcast on ESPN Radio and ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.” After the game, the ballpark will be converted to a permanent softball field and multi-purpose facility for the base, according to the Army.
Construction on the new ballpark begins Wednesday.
The “Fort Bragg Game” will coincide with the base’s annual Fourth of July festivities and is meant to celebrate all of the nation’s service members.
Never miss a local story.
“We’re extremely grateful to Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association for their support to our service members and families,” Col. Brett Funck, Fort Bragg Garrison Commander, said in a statement. “This historic event and the converted multi-purpose facility will have enduring benefits for our entire Fort Bragg community for years to come.”
Both the Braves and Marlins play in the National League East division. The Braves will be the home team.
