A “Journey to Bethlehem” is scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 12-13 in Wesley Hall at Centenary United Methodist Church, 140 E. Market St., Smithfield. The church will re-create Bethelem as it was during the birth of Christ. Visitors will meet the shepherd, then the centurion, who will lead them to the census taker. They will go to the Roman tax collector and Herod before entering the Town of Bethlehem, where a woodcarver, potter, fisherman and basket weaver will be at work. Buy some unleavened bread, hot drinks or fruit from vendors in the marketplace. Step into the synagogue and speak to the rabbi. Visit with Mary, Joseph and the Baby Jesus as angels sing “Away in the Manger.” Admission is free; however you might want to buy bread from a vendor or give to the Bethlehem town beggars. Proceeds will go to the Smithfield Rescue Mission.
Here is the schedule of Christmas services at Horne Memorial United Methodist Church, 121 E. Second St., Clayton: “Hanging of the Greens,” 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29, in the fellowship hall; Moravian Love Feast, 9:45 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, in the fellowship hall; choir’s Christmas cantata, 8:30 and 11 a.m. in the sanctuary; and Christmas Eve services, 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall for children, 6 p.m. traditional service in the sanctuary and 8 p.m. traditional service with Communion, also in the sanctuary. At the “Hanging of the Greens” service, attendees will have the chance to make and Advent wreath, and the church will serve refreshments. The Moravian Love Feast will offer a simple meal of bread or cookies and juice or coffee. On Sunday, Dec. 27, the church will hold a contemporary worship service at 9:45 a.m. in the fellowship hall and a traditional worship service at 11 a.m. in the sanctuary. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, Greater Vision Worship Center invites children ages 4-18 to come to the church and choose a free Christmas gift for their parents. While children pick out gifts, the church, at 720 Second Ave. in Smithfield, will offer food and festivities for parents.
