The biographical work tells the story of New York native Fannie Secor Mitchener Hastings Gardner and her daughter, Mary Hastings Blandy, two somewhat atypical Southern ladies who lived in and around Smithfield from the Civil War period to the Great Depression.
“You will find no shortage of drama in the lives chronicled here,” the author states in his preface, “for here we have two ladies, five husbands, a true story of love and war, and of men and money.”
