Business software giant SAS is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its on-site health care center at its sprawling headquarters campus in Cary this week.

Beginning with a single nurse practitioner in 1984, today the SAS Health Care Center has 53 employees – including four family practice doctors, 11 nurses, 10 nurse practitioners, three nutritionists, a psychologist and three physical therapists.

SAS estimates that the on-site center, which includes a pharmacy that was established in 2012 – saved the company more than $8 million last year in saved employee time and reduced costs for the company medical plan, according to a blog post by SAS spokeswoman Shannon Heath.

SAS estimates that a typical round-trip visit to the center for a minor illness takes about 30 minutes – including a stop at the pharmacy. Ninety percent of the employees at SAS’s headquarters use the on-site center, with 75 percent of employees and 50 percent of their family members designating the center as their primary care facility.
