The Pantry has named Thomas “Tad” Dickson, a former chairman and CEO of Harris Teeter, to be chairman of its board of directors.

Dickson replaces Edwin Holman, who lost his seat on the board after three candidates put forward by a dissident shareholder group were elected to The Pantry’s nine-member board last month.

Dickson led Harris Teeter from February 1997 until the Matthews-based grocery store chain was sold to The Kroger Co. earlier this year.

The Pantry had opposed the election of the three independent nominees elected last month: Todd Diener, James Pappas and Josh Schechter. They replaced Robert Bernstock, Thomas Murnane and Holman.

The Cary convenience store chain has 1,538 stores in the Southeast, primarily under the Kangaroo Express brand.
