More high school graduates cross the stage, begin a new chapter

Thousands of seniors graduated from western Wake County high schools the last several days.

Cary High School

Number of graduates: 493

Sum of scholarships awarded: $5.4 million

Class motto: “What lies behind us and what lies before us is nothing compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Valedictorian: Paulina Powierza

Salutatorian: Richa Shah

Advice from valedictorian: “It’s important to have a goal in life and not let other people put down your goals,” Powierza said.

Lessons learned: “You can overcome any obstacle so long as you work hard at it and don’t let anything stand in your way,” Powierza said.

Middle Creek High School

Number of graduates: 398

Sum of scholarships awarded: $2.5 million

Class motto: Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

Valedictorian: Aakash Mehta

Salutatorian: Courtney Hoffmesiter

Class president: Lauren Sugarman

Advice from valedictorian: “You shouldn’t put things off,” Mehta said. “Don’t procrastinate, because it’s just a waste of time. Time management is the key to being successful.”

Lessons learned: “Put 110 percent into everything you do,” Mehta said. “Put in effort to be successful and to do what you want to do in life.”
