Apex standout sprinter Alexis Murphy entered the 100-meter dash the 4A state track and field team championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of N.C. A&T University Saturday just looking to have a good time.
Good thing she did; she won, with a personal best run of 11.66.
“I just thought about it as a confidence builder to help me get ready for the 200,” Murphy said. “I was just looking to have a good time in that race. It was a great surprise.”
Murphy won the 200 (23.96) as well, edging a game Tyler Brockington of Greensboro Dudley, who pushed the pace in the final 50 meters only to be turned back by Murphy.
Never miss a local story.
It was Murphy’s third individual state title of her high school career; she will run at the University of South Carolina next year.
Wakefield’s girls repeated their title with 60 points to runner-up West Mecklenburg’s 35.
Apex’s girls tied for sixth with 31 points.
Knightdale’s boys finished with 67 points to Pfafftown Reagan’s 38 on the day. The Fuquay-Varina boys were the highest-finishing Tri-Nine Conference team, finishing 10th overall with 21 points.
The Bengals’ Brian Davis was second in the 400, Clay Jones was fourth in the 800, and the 4-by-400 relay team took third.
