Cary students to attend summer science camp at Duke University
Four students from Cary have received full scholarships to attend Summer Science Sleuths, a two-week residential science camp at Duke University. The students are:

Summer Science Sleuths will run June 17-30. The students will live in a dormitory and participate in lab activities, field trips, recreation, surprise guests and visits to cutting-edge facilities.
Apex seniors receive SECU scholarships
The SECU Foundation, funded by members of the State Employees’ Credit Union, has presented a $10,000 four-year college scholarship to two high school students in Apex.
The scholarship will be used for tuition and university approved educational expenses over eight consecutive semesters.
• Rashawn King is a senior at Middle Creek High School and the son of Kathleen Merritt. He plans to attend North Carolina Central University.
is a senior at Apex High School and the daughter of Kevin and Neva Miller. She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill.
Given based on SECU’s philosophy of “People Helping People,” the scholarship recognizes the recipient’s community involvement, leadership skills, character and integrity, as well as scholastic achievement of maintaining a 2.5 or higher grade point average.
Apex student earns Eagle Scout
Daniel Gardner of Apex has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest achievement in Boy Scouting.
For his Eagle Project, Gardner led the design, construction, and installation of shelving, a tool storage rack, and exterior solar-powered lighting at the Western Wake Crisis Ministry in Apex.
Gardner is the son of Paula and Rick Gardner and a junior at Apex High School. He is a member of Boy Scout Troop 212 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Cary.
Cary Kildaire Rotary Club awards scholarships to Cary students
Morgan Rose Shelor has been awarded the 2012 Jean and BJ Copeland scholarship offered by the Cary Kildaire Rotary club. She will apply the $2,000 per year funding to college costs as a nursing student in the honors college at East Carolina University.
Shelor is the daughter of Pamela and James Shelor of Cary and has volunteered at Rex Healthcare, Wake Med of Cary and Rex Rehabilitation of Apex.
Hannah Smith Gore has been awarded the 2012 James Atkins Memorial Scholarship offered by the Cary Kildaire Rotary club. She will apply the $2,000 per year funding to college costs as a student in the music therapy program at Appalachian State University.
Gore is the daughter of Karen and Fred Gore of Cary and interned in the music-for-youngsters program at Middle Creek Elementary School.
