Cary student honored in Talent Search
Raghav Arun of Cary was a participant in the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth Talent Search. Raghav, who attends Washington Elementary School, was recognized for his exceptional performance on a rigorous, above-grade-level test given to academically talented students in second through eighth grades. About 30 percent of students who participate in the search earn an invitation to the awards ceremony.
Teachers named Kenan Fellows
The Kenan Fellows Program at N.C. State University has named its annual teacher internship awards. The following public school teachers were selected as 2015-16 Kenan Fellows. They will spend five weeks of their summer learning and gaining experience from local experts in nanotechnology, financial education, renewable energy, genetics research, energy, and other science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines.

Local students named to Dean’s List
Ryan Beaver of Apex, Brant Boucher of Cary and Jacob Hargrove of Cary were named to the Dean’s List at Hampden-Sydney College. Boucher was initiated in the honor scientific society Chi Beta Phi.
Timothy Frazier of Holly Springs was named to the Dean’s List at Champlain College.
Cary student earns recognition for SAT score
Sheridan Charles, a seventh-grade student at Triangle Math & Science Academy, was recognized at the Duke Talent Identification Program Seventh Grade Talent Search State Recognition Ceremony for her scores on the SAT. Sheridan is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Kirk Charles of North Raleigh.
Cary student wins writing contest
Maya Westerlund of Cary, a sixth-grader at West Cary Middle, won first place in the sixth-grade level of the 2015 Talent Search Writing Contest sponsored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program. She won $200. Her former school of Weatherstone Elementary, also wins $200.
Local students part of winning choral group
Longleaf School of the Arts’ choral group won the overall 2015 Grand Champion Award and the Grand Champion Award for its Mixed Choir at the Fiesta-Val Music Invitational April 10 in New York City. The chorale includes Olivia Haley and Marshall White of Cary; Will Cannon, Emma Hatcher, Becky Layko and Oscar Sindemark of Apex; and Abby Cotten and Shannon Verburg of Fuquay-Varina. Jonathan Pelletier of Willow Springs was recognized for outstanding solo performance.
Longleaf School of the Arts is a college preparatory charter high school in Raleigh with a focus on the fine arts.
Panther Creek student to attend science program
Aida Al-Akhdar of Cary, a 10th-grader at Panther Creek High, has been selected to attend the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston in June. The honors program is for high school students with a strong interest in science, technology, engineering or mathematics.
Cary student wins honorable mention
Bridgette Tran, a sixth-grade student at Resurrection Lutheran School, earned an honorable mention in a photo essay competition held by the N.C. Bar Association to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the Magna Carta.
Cary college student earns neuroscience award
Laura Keller of Cary, a biochemistry and neuroscience student at Bowdoin College, earned the Bowdoin Neuroscience Department's 2015 Munno Neuroscience Prize.
Leaders Save Lives
High school and college students, ages 16-24, who host blood drives between the first day of June and the last day of August and meet their blood drive collection goal may apply for scholarships through the American Red Cross’ Leaders Save Lives program. Students can win one of 10 scholarships of up to $2,500. For details, go to www.redcrossblood.org/leaderssavelives.
Thales Academy tours
Thales Academy of Apex will host tours of the elementary school program from 8-9 a.m. and the junior high and high school program from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 2, at 1177 Ambergate Station, Apex.
