Dr. Robert Glenn Lewis, 77, of Cary, died August 28, 2014, in Gaffney, SC.
Dr. Bob was a long-time resident of Cary. He retired in 2005 after 35 years of service as a science advisor, research manager, Branch Chief, and Section Chief with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Research Triangle Park. An internationally-known environmental scientist, he received one of the very few Distinguished Service Awards given by the EPA and the highest awards given by ASTM International. He was born on November 11, 1937, the youngest of eight children of Julius and Nellie Lewis of Morehead City. He received a B.S. in Chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1960 (Phi Beta Kappa) and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1964 (Sigma Xi). He was also an avid photographer, music collector, and genealogist, receiving several awards for his genealogical and historical books from the Society of North Carolina Historians.
He was a member for more than 50 years of the American Chemical Society and also a long-time member of ASTM International and the International Standards Organization (ISO), holding a several executive positions and chairmanships in these organizations.
Dr. Lewis is survived by his wife of more than 50 years, Sue Muirhead Lewis; his sons, Dr. Michael R. Lewis and wife, Annie of Columbia, MO, David G. Lewis of Sanford, NC, and Dr. Steven J. Lewis and wife, Kelly of Gaffney, SC; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Cherokee County (SC) Animal Shelter, to support Dr. Bob’s passion for cat rescue.
