Daniel Lee Hughes, 28, died at Duke University Hospital on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. He had been diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) in February, 2012.
A celebration of life service was held on Sunday, November 24, 2013 at 3:00 pm Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Rd. in Cary. Visitation followed the service. Rev. Mike Wimbley and Rev. Kevin Fleegle will be officiating. Casual dress was requested.
Daniel was born January 7, 1985 in Cynthianna, KY. He moved to the Raleigh area at an early age and attended various schools in Wake County.
When Daniel was in first grade, Steve Sims became his “big brother” in the Friends program sponsored by Building Together Ministries. Through the years Daniel became a part of the extended Sims family and in seventh grade Harry and Joanmarie Sims became his foster parents.
Never miss a local story.
During his teen years, Daniel was baptized at Ephesus Baptist Church where he was embraced by the community. He participated in Sunday school, the youth groups, sports, and a mission trip with World Changers to West Virginia.
He was awarded a GED from Forsythe Technical Institute in Winston-Salem, NC. His last job was in Wisconsin where he worked from September through November, 2011.
For the last year, Daniel lived at Brookridge Assisted Living in Apex. He knew and loved everyone there and they loved him.
Although he had a difficult life, Daniel was very resilient. He loved people. His beloved daughters, Kayleigh and Ashlee were the light of his life. Before his illness, Daniel loved playing sports, especially soccer, skating, and softball. He continued to enjoy watching sports on television and talking about his fantasy football team at every opportunity. Daniel’s positive attitude as his body deteriorated was an inspiration to all.
Daniel is survived by his precious daughters Kayleigh Hughes (8) and Ashlee Hughes (7); his foster parents, Harry and Joanmarie Sims; foster brothers Steve (wife Pam and daughters Lauren, Allison and Caroline), Dave (wife Erwin and son Harry); and foster sister Kathleen Knowlton (husband Chris, son Sam, and daughter Jackie). Daniel is also survived by his biological mother Donna Hughes of Kentucky and siblings Sonja (husband Jeff and daughter Anna) and Ken of Raleigh.
