Rita Regina Emery Canning, 89, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at her home in Cary, NC. She was born in Struthers, OH on June 6, 1923 to Louise Schnitzhofer Emery and John Vincent Emery Sr.
Mrs. Canning graduated from St. Mary of the Springs College in Columbus, OH where she double majored in Nutrition and Education. She served an internship at John’s Hopkins from 1945-1946. She worked as a Registered Dietician at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC until retiring in 1987. She enjoyed volunteering at Eva Perry Library where she bound books and repaired Bibles. Mrs. Canning was a member and volunteer for the NC Huntington Disease Family Community with NC-HDSA and NC-CCHD. She crocheted afghans for the local homeless shelter. She was a parishioner of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Cary, NC.
Mrs. Canning is survived by her children, Thomas J. Canning III, Timothy Canning and wife, Cindy, John Canning and wife, Jocelyn, Joseph Canning and wife, Naomi, Mary Edmondson and husband, Don, Ann Lassiter and husband, Ralph; 10 granchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and devoted sister, Mary Louise Emery.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas J. Canning Jr. and brother, John V. Emery Jr.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday, August 4, 2012 at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 804 High House Road, Cary, NC 27513. Burial will follow at Apex Cemetery in Apex, NC.
The family will receive friends starting at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, August 3, 2012 at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 200 S.E. Maynard Road, Cary, NC 27511. A Rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m.
The family would like to thank those who provided care and comfort to Rita and her family including Dr. Becky Campbell, Eileen Capel, Hospice of Wake County, Caring Senior Services and the Staff of Rex Hospital.
