Jerry Sanders Harris, 74, of Cary, NC died Saturday, January 5, 2013, of pancreatic cancer surrounded by family at home.
Jerry was born in Tryon, NC on April 8, 1938, and grew up in Swan Quarter and Washington, NC. He was active in Boy Scouts and earned his Eagle Scout in 1956. He received a BS in Electrical Engineering in 1960 and an MS in Electrical Engineering in 1968, both from North Carolina State University. He served as an officer in the US Army Signal Corps at Fort Huachuca, AZ and the Army Reserves. After 31 years with IBM, he retired as a Senior Engineer Manager. After retirement, he took accounting classes at North Carolina State University and passed the CPA Exam on his first try in 1993. Throughout his life, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, reading, traveling, and volunteering.
Jerry was an active member at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary, NC where he was a Deacon and served on many committees. He was also a volunteer and advocate for The Carying Place and Hospice of Wake County.
Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jean Stine Harris; three daughters, Judy Vaccaro and husband Vincent of Raleigh, Janet Surrett and husband Roy of Stuttgart, Germany, Jennifer Coltrane and husband Tom of Raleigh; one brother, Terry and wife Carolyn of Raleigh; grandchildren Julie Harris and fiancé Seth Maddox, Jasper, Tacy, and Miranda Surrett, and Sarah Coltrane; niece Lura Kelly and husband Fred of Garner and nephew Christopher Harris and wife Paris of Raleigh.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Ferol Vance Harris and Helen Sanders Harris.

Family will receive friends on Tuesday evening, January 8, 2013, from 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. A memorial service and celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Greenwood Forest Baptist Church in Cary.
