Update: Athens Drive’s Emilia Migliaccio will not play high school golf her sophomore season. This story has been changed to reflect that update.
One of the top two 4A girls golfers in the state returns to the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference. The other has elected not to.
SWAC team champion Green Hope, which was second in the 4A championships, brings back individual4A runner-up Meghan Symonds, a senior. Symonds was third in the state as a sophomore.
The Falcons bring back two more from their top five, senior Amanda Yannoni and sophomore Reilly Thomas, and will aim for a first team state title.
Never miss a local story.
Athens Drive sophomore Emilia Migliaccio would have been Symonds’ biggest competition this season, but she has decided to not play high school golf.
Migliaccio won the state, regional and conference championships in her first year. She shot a 29 in a regular-season nine-hole conference match, which set a new state record. The Jaguars, who were third in the league, are returning senior Lexie Johnston.
Holly Springs was fourth in the state last year, but lost its top golfer. Senior Courtney Normand, sophomore Natalie Petersen and senior Abby Snidemiller return for coach Tamara Cole.
Panther Creek junior Maggie Basile and Fuquay-Varina junior Brittany Greene were second-team all-conference players who narrowly missed qualifying for states. They were each beaten in a four-way playoff at the regional.
Panther Creek was fourth in the SWAC last year while Fuquay-Varina was seventh.
Apex was fifth, led by returning senior Maria Cassas. Middle Creek was sixth and Cary eighth.
