Three years ago, when interviewing with principal Matt Wight, Apex girls basketball coach Jay Huffman said he could see himself coaching the Cougars for many years to come. He called it a “destination job.”
But Huffman and his wife soon had their first child, now 16 months old. And so the coach who led the Cougars to a 44-32 record in three seasons – all culminating in a playoff berth – resigned earlier this week.
“My wife and I have been talking about it for a little while now,” Huffman said. “Priorities change.”
Huffman, who teaches at Fred A. Olds Elementary School in Raleigh, said this will be the first time in his professional career he hasn’t been coaching.
But with the off-season and in-season demands on coaching, Huffman said, “I’m not willing to give up the time that I can’t get back” with his daughter.
Apex went 20-5 this past season and finished second in the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference.
“It’s a wonderful place,” Huffman said of Apex. “It was a really challenging decision to make. But I feel good about it. And it’s certainly the right decision to make.”
