At the halfway point in the boys tennis season, Green Hope holds the top spot in the Southwest Wake Athletic Conference standings. The Falcons are ranked third in the state among 4A teams, their only loss coming to Cardinal Gibbons, the top-ranked 3A team.
A Friday afternoon showdown between Green Hope and defending 4A state champ Millbrook was rained out.
The Falcons have won at least a share of the last 12 boys tennis conference titles. Green Hope has handed the only conference losses of the year to Holly Springs and Panther Creek and will play Apex twice.
Panther Creek, which like all other SWAC teams lost 9-0 to Green Hope, will face Holly Springs twice after spring break in important matches with postseason implications. The top two teams from the SWAC get automatic bids, while the third-place team has to hope its overall win-loss percentage is good enough to land a wild-card spot.
Apex’s only conference loss has come to Panther Creek. The Cougars have yet to play Green Hope or Holly Springs, however, so the biggest matches are yet to come.
Middle Creek, despite losing defending 4A singles champ Nick Stachowiak to injury, brings the SWAC’s total of teams with winning records to five.
Cary has swept Fuquay-Varina but has not played Athens Drive. Athens and Fuquay, both winless, also have yet to play each other.
