Local athletes get N&O honors

Athletes from the southwestern Wake area were honored in the last two Sunday editions of The News & Observer as All-Metro teams for spring sports were announced along with final Triangle rankings in five sports.

Baseball: Fuquay-Varina’s Brett Daniels, Panther Creek’s Josh Maciejewski, Cardinal Gibbons’ Stephen Scott and Green Hope’s duo of Thomas Yoder and Troy Maslowski made the All-Metro team. Scott and Maslowski are juniors, while the rest are seniors.

Green Hope (21-4) ended the year ranked No. 2 in the area, with Panther Creek (17-10) taking fourth and Apex (12-13) finishing 13th.

Girls soccer: Panther Creek (23-1-1) ended the season No. 2 in the area and had the most All-Metro picks with three juniors – Rachael Everhart, Celeste Barnard and Courtney Cash. Holly Springs’ Dominique Babbitt also made the team, as did Cardinal Gibbons’ Morgan Reid and Cary Academy’s Rebecca Kenney.

Gibbons (21-2-2) was No. 3 in the final rankings, followed by No. 5 Cary Academy (14-3-1) and No. 9 Holly Springs (14-6-2).

Softball: Middle Creek sophomore Devin Wallace made the All-Metro team and her Mustangs (21-4) were No. 1 in the area. Cardinal Gibbons sophomore Elizabeth Pederson also made the team.

Fuquay-Varina (17-5) ended the year No. 6 in the area, while Apex (15-4) was No. 13.

Boys lacrosse: Undefeated Cardinal Gibbons (22-0) led the final rankings and placed junior Chris Lappin and seniors Robbie Lavelle and Gannon Morrison on the All-Metro team.

Middle Creek goalie Nick Arcuri was on the All-Metro team as were Apex’s Mike Daum and Colby Lalicker.

Apex (19-3) was runner-up in the rankings. Middle Creek (16-2) was eighth, Athens Drive (12-5) ninth and Green Hope (13-8) 10th.

Girls lacrosse: The southwest Wake area dominated the All-Metro team as Athens Drive’s Madeline Bromley, Apex’s Mia Castagnero, Jessie DeLuca and Rose Redfoot and Cardinal Gibbons’ Rebecca Wiley and Shelby Scanlin.

Apex (17-2) ended the year No. 1 followed by No. 2 Gibbons (16-3). Green Hope (10-6) was ninth.

Track and field: Apex’s Mihret Coulter, Drew Pederson and Reyho Tshiama made the Al-Metro boys track and field team along with Holly Springs’ Lamar Nobles.

Apex’s Anna Eaton and Sydnei Murphy, Green Hope’s Elly Henes and Cary’s Layla White made the girls team.

Boys golf: No one from the southwest Wake area made the All-Metro golf team.

Boys tennis: Cardinal Gibbons’ state champions Robert Kelly, Matthew Galush and Noah Constantine made the All-Metro team, along with Cary Academy sophomore Alex Yang.
