State Sen. Valerie Foushee handily defeated Republican challenger Mary Lopez-Carter in the race for her first elected term Tuesday in District 23.
Local Democratic Party officials appointed Foushee, a former state representative, to her Senate seat in September 2013. The seat was vacated when former state Sen. Ellie Kinnaird resigned to help voters prepare for the state’s strict new voter ID rules.
Voters returned Foushee to the Senate with 68 percent of the vote. Lopez-Carter had 32 percent. Lopez also mounted an unsuccessful bid in 2012 for an at-large seat on the Orange County Board of Commissioners.
Foushee, 57, lives in Chapel Hill and is a retired Chapel Hill Police Department administrator. She previously served as chairwoman of the Orange County Commissioners and chairwoman of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board.
