Political newcomer Diana Hales bested former Chatham County school board Chairman Norman Clark in the Democratic primary for District 3 Chatham County commissioner.
Hales won 4,193 votes to Clark’s 3,308 votes, according to final but unofficial results.
The winner will take on Republican small businessman Brian Bock, the current Chatham County Board of Commissioners vice chairman, in November.
Hales, 67, a retired communications and outreach specialist for the N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, ran as an anti-fracking advocate, saying the drilling would transform southern Chatham from rural to industrial.
Clark, 51, was elected to the school board in 2004 and served four years, two as chairman. He retired in 2009 after 23 years as a firefighter and police officer in Chapel Hill.
