The Town Council is scheduled to hold public hearings for multiple projects Wednesday, Jan. 20, including a new hotel proposed for a vacant residential site at 1609 E. Franklin St.
The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Council Chamber, 405 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.
The council’s agenda also includes public hearings for a planned car wash on Stancell Drive near Meadowmont and the 27-acre Merin Road housing community at Homestead Road and Billabong Lane. The Merin Road project is proposing 62 single-family homes and nine affordable townhomes.
The developer has asked the council to postpone the public hearing for the Franklin Street hotel to Feb. 22, citing a desire to further address community concerns raised since the project was first proposed in 2013.
The plan is for a six-story, 106-room hotel with 28 extended-stay apartments on 1.8 acres. It could include two affordable apartments, 123 parking spaces and a pedestrian path to Pritchard Park. The developer also offered to pay $13,200 to the town’s affordable housing fund.
The council also is being asked to rezone the land to from neighborhood commercial, with conditions, to a mixed-use village. The town’s Planning Commission and Community Design Commission have rejected the hotel plan.
