Interested resident have until Monday to apply for second annual town of Hillsborough Citizens Academy
Beginning March 16, the town will offer a free six-week course aimed at helping citizens increase their knowledge of town government as well as their interest and ability in influencing and participating in town decisions. Classes will take place 6:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays through April 20, with one Saturday class from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 2 to tour the town’s utilities system.
With the exception of the utilities system tour and one class, sessions will be at Durham Tech’s Orange County Campus in the Waterstone development, 525 College Park Road. The April 6 class on police and fire operations will take place at the Orange Rural Fire Department’s downtown station, 206 S. Churton St. The utilities system tour will take place throughout Hillsborough, with transportation provided.
The Citizens Academy is limited to 25 participants, with priority going to citizens who live or work within the town’s limits and to customers connected to the town’s water system. Fill out an online application at bit.ly/1TsYAfo, or pick up a paper copy at one of the following locations at Town Hall, Town Hall nnex or the Police Station.
The town also offers a Citizens Police Academy to introduce citizens to the work officers do, including sessions on uniformed patrol; the legal process; criminal and drug investigations; community services; and the K-9 unit. The most recent Citizens Police Academy was offered last fall.
