•  Northwood High School in Pittsboro finished in first place at the fourth annual “The Quill” writing competition hosted by the N.C. Association for Scholastic Activities. “The Quill” is the first ever statewide, on-demand writing competition. The purpose is to allow future novelists, scientists and journalists to benchmark themselves against the best students across N.C.
•  Jordan-Mathews FFA team recently placed 6th out of 52 teams in the state livestock judging competition. Team member Sarah Thomas finished in first place in the competition out of 169, with Dylan Smith finishing in 19th. Also on the team were Hannah Seitz and Wyatt Nixon.
•  Matthew James Leming, a junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, has been awarded a 2014 Goldwater Scholarship. UNC junior Samuel Jackson Resnick also received an honorable mention. The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program of Springfield, Va. provides up to $7,500 per year for educational expenses to sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences or engineering. The son of Gary and Lisa Leming of New Orleans, La., Leming attended T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville before coming to UNC as a Carolina Covenant Scholar.
