• Smith Middle School sent 12 students to the finals of the N.C. State Mathematics Contest on May 3 to compete in two contests: Level 1 for Math 1/Algebra 1 and Level 2 for Math 2/Math 3/ or Algebra 2 students. Several sixth-graders brought home accolades for the Level 1 competion. Aaron Dejong was crowned the state champion, Adrian Thananopavarn came in 2nd, and Adriana Kim was 4th. Matias Shundi and Eric Lu also qualified for the finals. The eighth-graders performed similarly in the Level 2 competition, with Matthew Dai being crowned state champion and Andrew Zhang coming in 3rd. Eric Xu, Andrew Qin, Vincent Xia, Martin Hito, and Eashwar Mahadevan also qualified for the finals and did well.
Mathew Dai represented North Carolina at the National MathCounts Championship held at Disney World Friday, May 9. Dr. Boyd Blackburn coached the North Carolina team this year.
