The holiday season is in full swing with lots of area activities. Tree lightings and parades highlight many celebrations, as well as tours, performances and more. Even Santa is scheduled to make appearances at several events.

Decorating party The Gingerbread House Decorating Party is 4-5:30 p.m. at the Orange County Main Library, 137 W. Margaret Lane, Hillsborough. Learn how Habitat for Humanity helps build houses, hear a Christmas tale about the Rockefeller Center Tree and build a graham cracker house. For ages 4 and up with a caregiver. Holiday House Tour Preservation Chapel Hill holds its annual Holiday House Tour from 6-9 p.m. Private homes in the East Franklin-Rosemary Historic District will be featured. Chapel Hill-Carrboro parade The annual Chapel Hill-Carrboro Holiday Parade is 10 a.m. to noon on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill. The parade begins in front of Morehead Planetarium and ends at Carrboro Town Hall. bit.ly/2g3fK1J
Home for the Holidays Orange County Animal Services’ annual Home for the Holidays pet events feature adoption specials, a canned pet food drive and photos with Santa. A dog adoption event is 10 a.m. to noon during the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Holiday Parade in downtown Chapel Hill. bit.ly/1LAdOFr
▪ Unopened cans of cat and dog food can be dropped off through Saturday, Dec. 17, at the Animal Services Center, 1601 Eubanks Road, Chapel Hill. The pet food will be delivered to pet owners in need by Orange Congregations in Mission and Carrboro/Chapel Hill Meals on Wheels. Those donating four or more cans will receive a ticket for a free photo with Santa on Dec. 17.

Historic Hillsborough Tour the historic district on a miniature train during the Historic Hillsborough Neighborhood Tour, formerly called the Holiday Home Tour, from 1-7 p.m. The event begins at Town Hall Campus, 101 E. Pet photos with Santa Wag in the holiday season with programs supporting Independent Animal Rescue. ‘Good Ol’ Girls’: Legendary Nashville singer/songwriters Matraca Berg and Marshall Chapman join Hillsborough novelists Lee Smith and Jill McCorkle for a special holiday performance. “Naughty AND Nice: The Good Ol’ Girls are Back” will be presented at 6 p.m. at Leland Little Auctions, 620 Cornerstone Court, Hillsborough. Toy donations The Hillsborough Police Department is collecting toys for area children. New, unwrapped toys for children of all ages may be donated at the station, 127 N. Churton St. No toy weapons or candy accepted. The toys will be handed out during a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the station.
