▪ Northwood High School theater students participated for the first time in a three-county improvisation competition at Cary High School. The school won fourth place.
The students are Delaney Galvin, Austin Korynta, Connor Lewis, Elizabeth McKnight, Chantal Shine, Cameron Underwood, Jasmine Wilikie and Ricky Young. Lewis won Best Overall Improviser and Korynta won Wild Card: Best Justifications.
▪ Deputy Nick Howard earned the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Life Saving Award. The award is given to recognize deputies who intervene when someone’s life is at risk.
In January, Howard responded to a 911 Hang Up call and found a parked, locked vehicle with its motor running, a hose connecting its exhaust pipe to one of its windows. Howard called for EMS, removed the hose and broke the car’s window to help the person inside until paramedics arrived, saving that person’s life.
▪ Conrad McCoy of Chapel Hill, a member of Boy Scout Troop 820, earned the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, he built benches and a podium for an outdoor classroom at Smith Middle School.
▪ Dean’s lists and students’ honors: Samuel Abernathy and Chad Williams of Chapel Hill were included in the Dean’s List at The Citadel. Spencer Brown, Katherine Dunleavy, Zachary Hepp, Benjamin Linke and Yvonne Nelson of Chapel Hill, Grant Glenn of Hillsborough and Rodrigo Catalan-Hurtado of Pittsboro were named to the Dean’s List at High Point University. Katherine Gallagher from Chapel Hill was named to the Dean’s List at The College of Wooster. Robert Gerber of Chapel Hill was named to the Dean’s List at Bucknell University. Samantha Shaw, a Woods Charter School student, was chosen to represent Chapel Hill as a National Youth Correspondent to the 2016 Washington Journalism and Media Conference at George Mason University.
