Mack J. Preslar of Chapel Hill, NC, died Sunday, June 29, 2014. He was born July 17, 1923 to the late John Everett and Mary Virginia (Jenny) McRorie Preslar in Sanford, NC, but grew up in Durham where he attended Durham High School and Duke University, pursuing his interest in electronics.
During WW2 he made many hazardous voyages as a communications officer in the U.S. Maritime Service. After his service he became Associate Director of the UNC-CH Communications Center, which morphed into the Department of Radio, Television and Motion Pictures. Later he joined the Department of Otolaryngology to conduct research into deafness. During this time he was honored to represent the University at the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in Bangkok, Thailand. Mack’s longest employment was in the private sector as CEO of Demlar Medical which he founded.
In addition to his parents Mack was preceded in death by his first wife Jane Thomasson, his second wife Letsy Gallagher, sister Kathleen Long, and brothers John and Robert. Survivors include his brother Seth (Anne) and nieces Anne Berk, Beth Preslar, Melissa Jessup and Kay Middleton.
A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of your choice.
