Lora Riehl of Chapel Hill, NC died on October 20, 2014. She was born in Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. She graduated from P.S. DuPont High School in 1941, followed by 2 years at Mary Washington College. In 1943, she married Lt. Ernest Riehl and began the peripatetic life of an Army wife ending in San Jose, California where she lived until retiring to Chapel Hill in 1991.
She is survived by her three children: Marilyn Cathcart (Jerry) of Minneapolis, MN; John Riehl, Laurel, MD; Richard Riehl, Charlotte, NC; grandchildren Elizabeth Burgin (Scott), Tampa, FL; Robert Mills (Laura), Minneapolis, MN; Ryan and Shane Riehl, Charlotte, NC; great-grandchildren Julia, Simone and Leah Burgin; Oscar and Remy Mills. Her brother Robert DesJardins (Janet) of Chapel Hill also survives her.
Lora used her organizational skills in a lifetime of volunteer work: Brownies, Little League, the San Jose Braille Library, and, for many years, the Vita tax program. She loved traveling, playing bridge, gardening, gourmet cooking, reading and crossword puzzles. She was a basketball “junkie”. When asked to name her greatest accomplishments, there were two: her children’s successful and interesting lives and her ability to return to work after 28 years as a stay-at-home mom to build a successful career as an Executive Secretary. Throughout her life, she never lost her curiosity and remained a pragmatic optimist.
At her request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. A celebration of her long and interesting life is planned for December. Donations in Lora’s honor may be made to the North Carolina Botanical Garden, Chapel Hill.
