Ronald Wade Mann, Sr., 79, died peacefully in his sleep on December 4, 2014. Born in Carrboro in 1934 to Edward Newton Mann and Bessie Beck Mann, Ronnie was a life-long Chapel Hill-Carrboro resident, attending Chapel Hill High School and graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1957. He was an active member in a number of community organizations over the years including Jaycees/Roosters, Kiwanis, Chapel Hill Investment Club (CHICO), and others. Ronnie most enjoyed his membership and service at University Presbyterian Church, where he served on every committee he could and sang an enthusiastic Bass in the Chancel Choir. He was known and loved as a fixture at Fitch Lumber Company, where many knew him as “Sunshine”. He retired from Fitch in 2000 after 38 years and enjoyed an active retirement splitting time between a house on the sound at Emerald Isle, NC and Chapel Hill.
Mann is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kristi Pendergraft Mann, son, Ronald Wade Mann, Jr. and his wife Lauren Shaw Mann, and two grandchildren Ronald Wade Mann, III, and Caroline Maria Mann. He is preceded in death by his daughter Stephanie Mann Bessmer and survived by her sons Michael Thomas McDonald of Greensboro, NC and Matthew Ernest McDonald, his wife Lauren Harris McDonald, and their daughter Cory Ann of Raleigh, NC. Also surviving are Ronnie’s son in law William Charles Bessmer, his brother Edward Newton Mann, Jr., sisters Sandra Mann Patterson and Susan Reid Mann, and their families.
A celebration of life service will be held at University Presbyterian Church, 209 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC on Monday, December 8 at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends following the service.
