Stewart Davis McElyea III died at home in Chapel Hill, NC on April 28, 2014. He was 70 years old.
Mac, as he was called by his immediate family, was born June 17, 1943 to Ruth and Stewart McElyea, Jr. He graduated from Fairmont High School in Kettering, OH in 1961 and shortly thereafter joined the Navy. He served on the USS Navasota during the Viet Nam War. He returned home to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Denver, and later earned his MBA from Illinois State.
Stu’s career at Caterpillar Inc. spanned 34 years. He began in Peoria, IL as a Staff Accountant in 1968. He held various positions in Decatur and Peoria before moving to Lafayette IN in 1988 where he served as Business Resource Manager for Caterpillar’s Large Engine Center. In 1998, he was promoted to that role in the Mining and Construction Equipment Division located in Decatur, IL. He retired in 2002 as Business Resource Manager for Caterpillar Motoren GmbH & Co. KG in Kiel, Germany.
While in Lafayette, he served on the boards of the Wabash Center and American Cancer Society.
Stu was an avid sailor and athlete. He and Barbara spent summers cruising Lake Michigan and the Chesapeake Bay. After retirement they explored the ICW and Gulf Coast of Florida on their sailboat, Illusion. Stu also enjoyed running road races including the Chicago Marathon. He took up cycling in retirement and completed the Mountains to Coast Ride in North Carolina.
Stewart is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughters Joy Wenberg (Ben) and Carrie Buehler (Brian), grandchildren Benjamin James Wenberg, Jonah Wenberg, Thomas Mac Buehler and Callie Buehler, his brother Bill McElyea (Ann) and sister Sue Farrell (Tom).
