Sarah Elizabeth Marley Denton (Beth) died on Tuesday, May 26, 2015, in Charlotte, NC. Born on January 14, 1945, she was the daughter of David D. (“Red “) and Lois T. Marley of Chapel Hill, NC, where Beth grew up. Both parents predeceased her.
She was educated in the Chapel Hill public schools, and, following graduation from Pfeiffer College in 1967, was devoted to helping others through a career in social work that spanned 38 years. She never waivered in her commitment to improving the lives of those less fortunate.
Beth is survived by her loving son, Jason P. Denton, of Charlotte; her loving sister Kay Marley Watson and husband Richard L. Watson, of Rocky Mount; beloved niece Paige Dunlap, her husband Charly Pivert, and their son Julien Kai Pivert, of Austin, TX; beloved niece Whitney Denton and her daughter Veda Denton, of Wilmington; beloved nephew Matthew Dunlap, his wife Lisa Dunlap and their daughter Anya Ruby Mahealani Dunlap, of Honolulu, HI; beloved nephew Josh Denton and his family, of Pittsburgh, PA; aunts, Betty T. Holloway, of Chapel Hill, and Nancy Marley, of Angier; uncle, Edwin Lee Thompson, of Siler City; stepson Chuck Denton, his wife Elizabeth Sanchez Denton, and their daughters Julia and Jenna Denton, of Carlsbad, CA; Tommy Denton, of New Bern; Ruth R. Denton, of Clinton; numerous cousins and close friends.
Beth’s wish was to be cremated. A memorial service is being planned for a later time. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your local animal rescue center.
Beth was a kind and gentle soul. The caption under her photo in the 1963 CHHS yearbook read, “I would be friends with you and have your love.” She embodied that sentiment in her lifetime, and hoped that we will strive to do the same. She probably would also urge each of us to adopt a kitten or a puppy and to hug a social worker at every opportunity.
