Eleanor Francis “Lynn” Dudka passed away December 13, 2015 at UNC Hospitals after a brief illness. Her husband and sons were at her bedside.She is survived by her husband of 34 years, Stephen Miller; sons Thomas Dudka, of Alpharetta GA and Geoffrey Miller (Kelly), of Raleigh, NC, daughter Allyson Defonte (Nick) of Wantagh, NY; brothers Fredrick Foulds (Claire), of Ardrossan Alberta, Canada, Douglas Foulds of Vancouver, Canada and was preceded in death by brother Raymond Foulds; sisters Alice Hursey (Jim) of Champaign, IL and Geraldien (Geri) Korotach (David) of Morden Manitoba, Canada; niece Jennine Schreiber (Bradley) of Beaumont Alberta, Canada.Lynn was born in Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada on January 31, 1943 to the late Frederick William Foulds and Nora Francis Foulds.Lynn lived primarily in Edmonton Alberta Canada growing up and moved to San Luis Obispo, CA. upon first moving to the US. She graduated from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana with a BS degree in Nursing in 1971.Lynn had a distinguished and highly successful career in nursing, spanning over three decades. She began her career at Duke Medical Center, Durham, NC in 1972 on Reed surgical unit. In 1974 she became brain tumor clinical nurse coordinator for neurosurgeon, Dr. Stephen Mahaley. In 1976, Dr. Mahaley accepted the position of Chief of Neurosurgery at UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC and Lynn became his head clinician, working primarily with brain tumor patients and their families. Lynn also co-authored several clinical research brain tumor study papers while working with Dr. Mahaley and she was nationally recognized by her peers in the field of clinical research for developing nursing protocols for patient care.In 1981, Lynn accepted a position as Nurse Manager of the Clinical Research Unit (Rankin Ward) at Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC. She maintained that position for 24 years, until her retirement in 2005.Lynn had a real love and passion for gardening and flowers. She was also an avid animal lover, especially dogs. A celebration of her life service will be held at 2PM, Sunday, January 31, 2016 at North Carolina Botanical Gardens, 100 Old Mason Farm Rd, Chapel Hill, NC 27517. This will be a casual, inspirational memorial with uplifting stories and memories shared by those closest to her. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Paws4ever Animal Sanctuary: 6311 Nicks Road, Mebane, NC 27302.
