John Joseph Maxwell, Jr. of Chapel Hill passed away Sunday, January 17, 2016. John was a loving father, a proud grandfather, and a friend to all. John was born in Colorado Springs, CO, but was a Tar Heel through and through. John’s huge heart and great sense of empathy enabled him to make friends with anyone, and everyone was always welcome for a meal and entertaining stories. He was well loved in Chapel Hill for his endless hospitality, excellent cooking, and delicious BBQ sauce. John traveled around the world as an environmental technician for GE and Entropy, and enjoyed taking deep-sea fishing trips to Florida and Sunset beach. In addition to fishing, John enjoyed listening to his vast music collection, watching the Tar Heels, or celebrating life with his family and friends. John is survived by his daughter Hannah (Maxwell) Elliott and her husband Joseph Elliott, son Jacob Maxwell and his daughter Caedyn, and his brother David Maxwell and his family. A memorial service and reception will be held at the Church of Reconciliation at 110 N Elliott Rd, Chapel Hill at 2:00 pm on Saturday, January 23rd. In lieu of flowers the family is asking that donations be made to the Hospice Home of Alamance County or the Sierra Club in his name.
