Captain Ralph Alton Mason, Jr. passed away peacefully on March 23, 2016 at his home near Chapel Hill, NC. The cause of death was heart failure. He was 83 years old.Captain Mason was born in Deposit, New York in 1932. His parents, Ralph A. Mason and Edna Ruth May Mason and one brother, William H. Mason Lt. USN predeceased him.Captain Mason graduated from high school in Washingtonville, NY and received a BS degree from State University of New York at New Paltz. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the US Navy.Captain Mason is a graduate of the Command and Staff School at the Naval War College and has logged more than 6000 hours of pilot time, having qualified in 28 different military aircraft. Captain Mason was awarded two Air Medals for flights in support of combat operations in Vietnam. His final assignment with the Navy was serving at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. He also holds a Master of Science in Administration from George Washington University and a Master of Business Administration from The American University. Following his retirement from the Navy, Ralph built a home in Chapel Hill, NC. He was appointed Associate Chair of the UNC Chapel Hill Graduate School of Computer Science. Captain Mason managed the design and construction of UNC's Sitterson Hall. He later led a similar large construction project to build the Chapel Hill Bible Church on Erwin Road. Ralph was married to the former Joan Aldecoa of Suffern, NY. They raised five children together and had 60 happy years of marriage. Survivors include Joan, the five children, Ralph Mason III and wife, Joanna; Patricia Rinehard and husband, Gary; Nancy Daly and husband, James, Lawrence Mason and wife, Kristen; and Barbara Ann Mason. He also leaves a sister, Captain Ruth Ann Wilson, USN Ret. and 14 grandchildren.Captain Mason’s energy and industry were limitless. He tirelessly and cheerfully cared for his wife, his home, his church, his causes and his community.A Memorial Service to his memory will be held at the Chapel Hill Bible Church, 260 Erwin Road, Chapel Hill, NC at 3 PM Saturday, April 23 with a reception to follow. Friends are invited to attend along with the family.
