Roses from reader Clarence Whitfield to the Kiwanis Club of Chapel Hill-Carrboro for putting on its 54th annual Pancake Jamboree.
“Despite a rainy day – two years in a row – it was a successful event supported by many local merchants and businesses as well as townspeople who attended,” he writes.
Proceeds from the Pancake Jamboree, and the accompanying Silent Auction, go to support local youth activities, including college scholarships for seniors in the three local high schools. The Kiwanis Club also sponsors the Terrific Kids program, Key Clubs in all three of the local high schools, and a Circle K Club at UNC-Chapel Hill.
On the international level Kiwanis combines forces with UNICEF to promote health programs in third world countries. Kiwanis was founded in 1915. The local club was chartered in 1928 and has the distinction of having furnished four Governors of the Carolinas District, something not many clubs in the two Carolinas can claim.
Despite its small size, the Kiwanis Club of Chapel Hill-Carrboro is an active, productive club which meets on the first and third Wednesday nights at 6 p.m. at The Chapel Hill Country Club. Its membership is open to both men and women and it is actively seeking new members. Interested persons may call 919-942-5746 or by email at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Roses from reader Jim Wise to all the agencies and individuals who took part in the Mock Car Crash programs at Carrboro, Chapel Hill and East Chapel Hill High Schools this spring.
“This is a biannual effort put on for all of our juniors and seniors near prom time to raise awareness of impaired and distracted driving as well as other dangers of alcohol and drug impairment,” he writes. “We had wonderful participation, cooperation and leadership from all the following; Carrboro Fire Department, Carrboro Police, Chapel Hill Fire, Chapel Hill Police, Orange County EMS and 911 Call Center, Orange County District Attorney’s Office, UNC Injury Prevention, UNC Air Care, Barnes Towing, Brown Brothers Collision, Talbert’s Towing, and a very special thank you to Hans Vogel for speaking to our students.”
