On a night when the visiting Pro Cup racing series was scheduled to be the big story, Mike Chambers stole the headlines by winning his very first late model race at Orange County Speedway.
In front of the track’s biggest crowd of the year, the local driver charged from his sixth-place starting position to garner the win Saturday, greatly pleasing OCS fans who regard the Timberlake native as a local hero. His previous best was a second place in the Sherry Love Johnson Memorial race on April 2.
“It’s been a long time coming. We’ve been knocking on the door all year long,” Chambers stated in victory lane.
Grayson Massey and Mason Hudson chased Chambers to the checkered flag Saturday.
His triumph in the 50-lap event unofficially vaulted Chambers into the division’s point lead ahead of Chris Denny and Chuck Lawson, who finished fifth and sixth, respectively.
In the night’s featured race, a 200-lap Pro Cup feature, Caleb Holman out-dueled Coleman Pressley for the win. Holman, Pressley, Benny Gordon and Brian Kesolowski all took turns at the front of the pack in the ultra competitive affair.
It was the second Pro X-1R series victory of the year for Holman, adding to his lead in the division’s points race.
Also Saturday, Lawson won for the third straight time in the OCS track’s limited sportsman race. Lawson took the lead from Daniel Schadt near the end of the 35-lap battle to keep his winning streak alive.
Jerry Wilkerson led flag to flag to gain his first ever win in a 25-lap street stock race, and Layne Riggs took his third straight in a 25-lap pure stock battle after starting in the sixth position.
