After 14 years of racing in the Late Model division, driver Mike Chambers finally has collected his first career Late Model win at Orange County Speedway. And now he’s tied for the season’s points lead.
Not only did the 36 year-old driver collect his first win with his finish July 26 in Rougemont, but he also put himself on the top of the OCS Late Model points standings alongside Chris Denny.
“We’re focused on winning the championship at Orange County,” Chambers said as he prepared for Saturday’s race night.
Chambers and Denny, both from Timberlake and both with 276 points, are just six ahead of perennial favorite Chuck Lawson.
Lawson of Danville, Va., finished a disappointing sixth in the most recent LMSC race. The 2012 Late Model champion angrily got out of his car and stated: “I’m going to buy a new motor and win the rest of the races this season.”
Lawson would later go on to win the Limited Late Model race that night.
Denny, who’s won twice at OCS this summer and who many thought had the most dominant car last race, was black-flagged July 26 for jumping the start in a mid-race restart following a caution was displayed on Lap 26. He would go on to finish fifth after persevering through a stop-and-go penalty.
Currently, it is safe to say that the points battle will be up to Denny, Chambers, and Lawson, as challenger Justin Newlin sits a distant 24 points out in fourth place after suffering another part failure July 26.
Newlin’s problems on Lap 25 of a race he was leading seems characteristic of what’s happened several times this season to a series of favorites. As soon as a points contender appears ready for a break out, some sort of misfortune has fallen upon them.
Chambers, who appears to have momentum going for him this week, has to mull that as he gears up for the next races at the Rougemont track on Aug. 23.
Qualifying Aug. 23 is scheduled to start at 5:40 p.m., and racing is anticipated to start at 7 p.m.
Late Models, Limiteds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks and The Custom Steel Fabricators of Randleman Super Mini Trucks are scheduled to run. For more information please visit ocstrack.com.
