St. Thomas More will host “Special Knight” of basketball
The local Knights of Columbus and Saint Thomas More School will host a “Special Knight” of basketball from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, featuring the 2014-15 STM boys and girls basketball teams and players from Special Olympics of Orange County. The program will include intra-squad games by each of the STM teams, plus an exhibition game with the SOOC athletes.
The night also will include a raffle and prizes.
Admission is free, but a donation of $2 by individuals or $5 for families is suggested. Proceeds from the event will go to the Knights of Columbus Lamb Campaign, which supports agencies that help people with intellectual disabilities.
AAU Swarm plans youth basketball tryouts
The N.C. Swarm is looking for boys grades 4 thru 9 from Orange or Durham County who are interested in playing basketball in the 2015 AAU season. The Swarm will host tryouts beginning at 1 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Chewning Middle School gym, located at 5001 Red Mill Road in Durham. Chapel Hill-Northern Guilford tickets available in advance
Tickets for the N.C. High School Athletics Association football East Region final will be on sale in the main office at Chapel Hill High School for $7 through Thursday. The game features Chapel Hill (10-3) at Northern Guilford (13-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.
Tickets will cost $8 at the gate at Nighthawk Stadium.
Tar Heel women's basketball gets third top-25 victory
The North Carolina women basketball team moved up to No. 6 in the Associated Press top 25 poll after winning three games last week to capture the Rainbow Wahine Shootout title in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The three wins for Carolina included a 70-54 victory over then-fifth-ranked Stanford, the third top-25 victory for the Tar Heels already this season.
The Tar Heels (7-0) continue their non-conference schedule at No. 18 Rutgers (6-0) Thursday in Piscataway, N.J., in the annual ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
