East Chapel Hill’s Brooke Pritchard defeated Elizabeth Johnson of Apex, 4-1, 4-0, last Sunday at Chapel Hill Country Club to win the Girls 16-and-under title at the 26th annual N.C. Junior Level 4 Championships.
Four other Chapel Hill players reached the championship finals of their age divisions in a field that comprised 166 junior players from across North Carolina.
East Chapel Hill’s Connor Lutz fell to Ali Abernathy of Asheville, 4-2, 5-3, in the Boys 18u finals, while Lauren Baddour (Girls 14u), Maddie Moore (Girls 10u) and Sunimal Desilva (Boys 12u) all also reached the bracket finals.
One semifinal match stood out in particular for Chapel Hill Country Club members as Jonathan Baddour of the CHCC battled Colin O’Hagerty of Hillsborough in what most thought to be the longest contest of the tournament. One rally in the matchup lasted 4 minutes and 160 shots. Match point went to 55 shots before O’Hagerty prevailed 4-1, 1-4, (7-5).
CHCC tennis pro and tournament host Lindsay Benton had to scramble some after cold rain forced cancellation of most of last Saturday’s rounds. He cited Derek Boone, Jarrod Randle, Jaime Montalvo and head USTA referee Joann Hundley as essential in helping to re-arrange a truncated Sunday schedule so the club could get 237 matches completed.
