Briefly ... East Chapel Hill takes second in Midwest 4A Regional

Kacia Vines of Cedar Ridge, Anna Passannante and Daniel Margolis of Chapel Hill and Northwood’s Alex Council and Imoh Udoh were among the big winners in the NCHSAA regionals.

Vines, Passannante, Council, Margolis advance with wins

Cedar Ridge's Kacia Vines is going to be a very busy young woman at Friday's NCHSAA 3A track and field championships in Greensboro.

Competing last Saturday in the 3A Mideast Regional at Northern Guilford, where the top four finishers automatically qualified for the state meet, Vines won the long jump (17 feet, 1.5 inches), and finished third in both the 400 meters (59.45 seconds) and high jump (5 feet 2 inches) and fourth in the 200 meters (25.32.)

Other individual winners at the regional included Chapel Hill's Anna Passannante (2:20.31) in the 800 meters, Alex Council of Northwood (11.87) in the 100, Cedar Ridge’s Alex Ives (158-2) in discus, Northwood’s Imoh Udoh (20-3) in the long jump, and Daniel Margolis of Chapel Hill (10 feet, 6 inches) in the pole vault.

Chapel Hill also will be sending qualifiers Drew Roeber (1600); Marija Crook (1600), Jecori Owens-Shuler (discus); and the Tigers’ 4x800 girls’ relay (Shannon Mumper, Milly Ames, Passannante, Crook) and 4x400 girls relay (Erica Johnson, Crook, Jessi Szymczak, Passannante)

East Chapel Hill takes second in Midwest 4A Regional

Led by Iyin Battle’s victory with the discus and a pair of qualifying runs by Ryan Brady (1600, 3200 meters), East Chapel Hill took second place in the boys’ standings in Saturday’s 4A Midwest Regional at Greensboro Dudley.

Battle also earned a second place in the shot put event to qualify for another spot in this Saturday’s NCHSAA 4A championship meet at N.C. A&T University’s Belk Track.

The East Chapel Hill 4x100 boys’ relay of Christian Fowler, Jerry Chang, Bryce Johnson and Eddie Vandy qualified with their time of 43.32 seconds for third place in the regional.

Lilly Price has the best finish for the East Chapel Hill girls with her 11:32.72 for third place in the 3200 meters.

NCHSAA brackets released

The NCHSAA has posted its brackets for the soccer and baseball post-season tournaments.

In soccer, East Chapel Hill (11-4-0) was seeded No. 13 in the NCHSAA East 4A and drew a first-round match at home with No. 20 Hoke County.

In the 3A soccer, Big Eight co-champion Chapel Hill (17-1-0) was set to host No. 24 Northern Nash and No. 16 Northwood (13-6-0) was to host No. 17 Southern Lee (11-6-0).

In the 2A East, Mid-State champion Carrboro (14-4-0) was the highest seed of any local team at No. 5 and got to host former Carolina-12 rival Durham School of the Arts (4-7-2), seeded No. 28.
