Carrboro, Chapel Hill, East all win conference cups
The Wells Fargo Conference Cup was so close this year in some area conferences that the outcome of one game would have made the difference in the annual all-sports competition.
Chapel Hill beat Cardinal Gibbons 116.5-110.5 in the Big Eight 3A in showdown between two of the state’s top programs.
East Chapel Hill defeated second-place Durham Jordan 92.5-88 in the Piedmont Athletic 4A, helped by the Wildcats' finishing ahead of Jordan in baseball, lacrosse and softball this spring.
Carrboro, the 2013 statewide Wells Fargo Cup winner, had the biggest margin of victory in area conference's all-sports competition. The Jaguars amassed 94 points in the Mid-State 2A Conference cup race, well ahead of Siler City Jordan-Matthews, which had 70 points.

Hickory Tavern, Ghost Riders to meet in co-rec
No. 3-seeded Hickory Tavern upset former champion Bread & Butter by an 11-8 score Thursday in the second round of the Carrboro Co-Rec Softball tournament. That sets up a game with No. 1 Ghost Riders.
The last two teams without a loss so far in the double-elimination tournament, Hickory Tavern and Ghost Riders are scheduled to play at 7:55 p.m. Tuesday at Anderson Community Park. The winner of that game advances to the championship finals on June 24. The loser drops into the elimination bracket.
Thursday's loss sent Bread & Butter into the lower bracket, where it faces Fightin' Squids in an elimination game on Tuesday. That 6:45 p.m. game is followed by the elimination game between Southern Rail and the Power of 2 at 9:05 p.m.
