Blazing, Kasold earn spots on U.S. national team
Chapel Hill natives Lauren Blazing and Michelle Kasold, plus seven University of North Carolina field hockey players, are among the 30 athletes named to the 2014-15 U.S. Women’s National Team, announced Wednesday by head coach Craig Parnham. The selections were made following the USA Field Hockey Women’s National Championship last weekend in Lancaster, Pa.
Kasold, a 2005 grad of East Chapel Hill High School, led the Wildcats to four state championships and then earned all-American honors at Wake Forest. She was a member of the U,S. Olympic team that competed in London 2012. Blazing was the team MVP at Durham Academy before becoming an All-ACC goalie for Duke, where she’s a rising redshirt junior.
They’re joined on the new U.S. team by Tar Heel juniors Casey Di Nardo and Emily Wold, plus five former Carolina players: Rachel Dawson, Katelyn Falgowski, Jackie Kintzer, Kelsey Kolojejchick and Caitlin Van Sickle.
Dawson, Falgowski, Kintzer, Kolojejchick and Wold were part of the U.S. team that finished fourth at the World Cup, a result that boosted the Americans two spots to No. 8 in the world rankings. Van Sickle also is a National Team veteran.
Houser named NSCAA Scholar All-American
Emma Houser of Carrboro High School has earned Academic All-American status from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. A senior forward this year for the Jaguars, Houser was the only high school player from North Carolina named to the 2013-14 honors squad.
She and twin sister Caroline Houser are signed to play next season at UNC-Asheville.
The NCSAA Scholar All-Americans will be recognized and presented their awards at the 2014 NSCAA High School All-America Brunch on Aug. 2 at Lake Buena Vista Palace in Orlando, Fla.
Wildcats readying fall football programs
The Wildcats may still be without a football coach, but the East Chapel Hill Touchdown Club is getting to work on the fall – actively searching for sponsors for the 2014 high school football season. Any individual or business that would like to place an ad in the Wildcats’ fall programs should email email@example.com.
