East’s Bright and Jones advance in NCHSAA tennis tournament
East Chapel Hill’s Savannah Bright and Victoria Jones, the top two singles entries from the PAC-6, finished second and third, respectively, in the NCHSAA’s 4A Midwest Regional tennis tournament last weekend at Greensboro Grimsley. That earned them spots in the upcoming NCHSAA individual championship tournament, to be held this Friday and Saturday in Raleigh.
In the dual-team tournament, the Wildcats (12-2) were seeded No. 7 in the East and drew a first-round match with No. 2 Greenville Conley (12-0).
In the 3A, Big-8 champion Cedar Ridge (17-1) was to host No. 7 Swansboro (12-4), while No. 8 Northwood (9-5) was at No. 1 Wilson Fike (18-1).
Never miss a local story.
In the 2A, No. 7 Carrboro (7-3) was at No. 2 Edenton Holmes (17-2).
Bunch wins two, but Dease bags Orange County Speedway title
Driving a car from the Lee Pulliam stables, Garrett Bunch pulled off a sweep of the twin, 50-lap late model stock car features at Orange County Speedway on Saturday night. It was the final night of racing for 2016 at the three-eighths mile track in Rougemont.
Bunch took advantage of a crash involving front row starters Layne Riggs and Danny Willis Jr. to win race one. Terry Dease clinched the 2016 track championship in LMSC class with his second place in the first of the twin races. Chuck Lawson finished third in the 15 car field.
In the second of the twin LMSC races, Bunch held off Riggs by inches in race two after the two engaged in a spectacular duel that saw the two run side by side for much of the event. Jay Payne got the final podium spot.
“The car was good from the time we unloaded,” Bunch stated in victory lane
Daryl Carver won the night’s limited sportsman event over Mike Chambers and Jerry Hinesley. Boo Boo Dalton finished fourth and took home the limited points title.
Carrboro Co-Rec Softball League nearing fall finals
Former champion Ghost Riders and No. 1 seed Bread & Butter both found themselves in the elimination bracket after opening rounds of Carrboro’s Co-Rec Softball League fall tournament.
B&B has to face Power of 2, and Ghost Riders meets Fightin’ Squids, in Tuesday night games. The losers of those games will be out of the double-elimination tournament, while the winners will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday for the right to play in the bracket final against either No. 5 Dingos or No. 2 Hickory Tavern. The winner of that Thursday game would advance to next the Carrboro championship finals on Nov. 1.
Dingos upset Bread & Butter 5-4 last Thursday and Hickory Tavern beat Fightin’ Squids 14-8. Dingos and Hickory Tavern play Tuesday night, Oct. 25; the loser gets bumped into the elimination bracket, while the winner automatically advances to the Nov. 1 finals.
