The start of last Saturday’s Orange County Invitational championships in track and field had to be rolled back from its original time because Chapel Hill-Carrboro athletes needed to be in school that morning for a snow “make-up” day. But the 1:30 p.m. starting time at Cedar Ridge was better late than never for Chapel High High School, which started the meet by sweeping the 4x800 relays and ended up by winning both the boys’ and girls’ team championships.
Chapel Hill junior Harrison Young was a three-time winner. He won the 200 meters (22.4 seconds) and set a meet record in the open 400 meters (50.94) before anchoring the winning 4x400 relay.
Young was at least a dozen strides behind East Chapel Hill’s anchorman when he received the baton and caught him in the climatic event’s last 100 meters.
“It was really fun,” Young said. “I was glad to get three personal-best times, but it was also fun because our team won.”
Never miss a local story.
Young’s time in the 400 was one of 14 records set in the meet, which was first held in 1995.
Monte Mitchell of Orange did triple duty by winning the 100 sprint and setting records in both the 110- hurdles (15.24) and 300-hurdles (40.74).
Mitchell and Young both bettered Cameron Cooper’s record time of 22.64 seconds in the 200 meters, but missed the official record after their hand-clocked times were adjusted up .24 of a second to meet electronic timing standards.
Competing at her home track, Cedar Ridge’s Kacia Vines won the high jump with leap of 5-feet-0 and then bettered her own meet records — in the girls 400 meters (1:01.04) and the long jump (18 feet, 3.25 inches).
Cedar Ridge teammate Chris McCoy also set a record in the long jump, winning the boys event with a leap of 22 feet, 0.25 inches).
Despite an extremely slow pace on the first lap, Chapel Hill’s Clare McNamara ran away with the girls 1600 meters in a record time of 5:11.8, out-kicking Carrboro’s Helen Morken (5:16.5) and Amanda Hickey (5:17.2).
Maysa Araba of Carrboro repeated as the 800 champion with a record time of 2:15.10. McNamara (2:18.1) stayed right off her shoulder until the final 300 meters, when Araba began her kick and pulled away.
“I tried to take it out conservatively on the first lap so I’d have plenty left to run the last split as fast as I can,” Araba said.
Kiara Dean of Chapel Hill won the 100 hurdles in a record time of 16.34 seconds.
Carrboro’s Magnus Herweyer and East Chapel Hill’s Iyin Battle were in a class by themselves during a back-and-forth contest all afternoon in both the shot put and discus. Herweyer won the shot put by matching the meet record of 51 feet, 8 inches, first set by Cedar Ridge’s Jake Geary in 2010, and he broke the discus record with his mark of 170 feet, 1 inch.
“We started throwing on the same team, the Durham Striders, last summer, so we knew we were close to each other,” Herweyer said. “It’s friendly. We’re good competition for each other.”
Battle, second in both events, missed his chance at a meet record when his discus throw of 180 feet sailed wide of the area and was disallowed.
Cedar Ridge’s boys 4x200 relay (1:33.2) and Chapel Hill’s boys 4x800 relay (8:21.4) both set meet records.
