Craig Moore must have felt like the entire world was off his shoulders.
After racing sparingly last year, the 2013 Orange County Speedway late-model champion returned to the winner’s circle in a big way Saturday night by sweeping both ends of a late-model stock doubleheader in dominating fashion.
Even after thrashing the field in both 50 lappers of the Paul Ring Memorial, Moore indicated that his competitors’ worries have only begun.
“It was good,” Moore told a couple of his fellow racers after the night was done. “But I feel like there’s still a little extra there that I haven’t got to yet.”
Never miss a local story.
Saturday’s wins were Moore’s first since his 2013 title run. He spent most of 2014 building a new car from the ground up and began the 2015 season with a second place finish in the OCS season opener four weeks earlier.
Chris Denny chased Moore to a second-place finish in race one.
After a redraw of the top six for race two, Moore caught up with pole sitter Terry Dease about two-thirds of the way in and scampered away to win again. Dease managed to hold on to second in that one.
Layne Riggs withstood a challenge from Chuck Lawson to win his first ever limited sportsman race. Riggs and Lawson were way out front when Lawson spun while trying to take the lead late. Boo Boo Dalton charged from an eighth starting spot to finish second.
In the night’s other racing: Danny Winstead scored triumphs in two pure stock clashes; Jason Warsing claimed a street stock win; Kiser Martin picked up the mini super truck trophy; and Thomas Clayton took the Vintage Sportsman event.
