The Highlanders Rugby Club closed out an undefeated season in good fashon last weekend by winning another state championship.
The Highlanders topped the Union County Lions on Saturday afternoon in the North Carolina state finals. At 13-0 so far in 2016, the Highlanders have qualified for the top bracket in the USA Rugby national championships later this month.
The Highlanders went up 17-0 at the half with tries from Dewan Roets and Jose Escobedo and a penalty from man-of-the-match Lawrence Bridges.
The Lions came back with two tries early in the second half, but a further penalty from Lawrence Bridges and a late try from Brian Sibalo sealed the championship for the Chapel Hill side.
“This has been a great group of players and a great season,” HRC coach Robert Joseph commented. “Our goal this year was to win state championships, and we are proud to have achieved this. To go 13-0 and be invited to the national championships is a bonus and testament to the progress that this club is making.”
