2015 events now online
The Johnston County Visitors Bureau has compiled a list of events scheduled for the first quarter of 2015.
The biggest event is the Battle of Bentonville 150th anniversary reenactment, which will take place March 21-22.
The Battle of Bentonville was the largest battle fought in North Carolina and will be the largest reenactment in North Carolina celebrating the 150th anniversary. More than 50,000 people visited Bentonville during the 2010 reenactment weekend, with similar figures expected for 2015.
As always, the times and dates of events are subject to change. Check out the calendar of events at johnstoncountyevents.com.
Airport to open new terminal
The Johnston County Airport will open its new terminal at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at 3149 Swift Creek Road, Smithfield.
The morning event will allow guests to tour the 8,600-square-foot terminal, which offers modern facilities for pilots who fly into Johnston County for business or pleasure.
Ray Blackmon is manager of the Johnston County Airport. “Johnston County has a long history of aviation dating back to the 1917 Johnston County Fair, when world-famous aviator Carl Mather performed aerial stunts,” he said. “Visionaries dreamed, and the Johnston County Airport opened in 1978. Since then, the airport runway distance was extended twice, and the 36-year-old building no longer served the needs of aviation connectivity.”
Johnston Regional Airport has a 5,500-foot runway. The airport is also equipped with an instrument landing system.
State extends JCC program
The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles has announced an extension of its truck driving training program for military veterans. The DMV’s partners in the program are Johnston Community College, Fayetteville Technical Community College, Fort Bragg and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
